Photographs of Portugal - Lisbon and the Serra da Estrela

Praça do Comércio
The Praça do Comércio just north of the Rio Tejo in the centre of Lisbon.

Rossio
Rossio (one of the main squares in the centre of Lisbon). Behind, you can see the ruins of the Convento do Carmo church.

Views of Lisbon - taken from the castle or from other high spots nearby. You can see the 'Ponte de 25 Abril' suspension bridge in the background of two of them.

The Zezere valley
The Zezere valley leads down from near the highest point in the Serra da Estrela to Manteigas.

A large trig point and a building on the top of a hill
This wasn't the only summit on which I found one of these vast trig points (the black and white thing on the right).

A Dead End in the Mountains
Dead End Street... I hiked up from the valley on to the plateau. Some way from any nearby proper road, with only some tracks and a small unused hut or two around, I found this sign-post!

Manteigas Manteigas
I stayed at Manteigas, a small town in the centre of the Serra da Estrela for two nights.

Chaos! (village sign-post) Great!... Late in the evening, I arrived at the village of Chaos! Predictably, it fails to live up to its name - it's a very organised village, stretching along the road which heads towards Guarda. (OK, so it's actually Chãos, and pronounced entirely differently...)
